Closing the Gap

Between Diagnosis

and Care

Our Patient Care Program helps women overcome financial, transportation, and healthcare barriers so they can complete life-saving cervical cancer treatment.

A Diagnosis Should Not Be the End of the Story

For too many women in low-resource settings, a diagnosis is only the beginning of a long and uncertain journey. Transportation, lodging, costs, and complex health systems often stand in the way of treatment.

Our Patient Care Program removes those barriers, ensuring every woman has the support she needs to receive and complete life-saving care.

Patient Stories

Real Stories. Real Impact.

Behind every number is a woman, a family, and a journey toward care.

I am from Santa Elena, La Paz, Honduras, and live in a community called Ojo de Agua. Receiving a cancer diagnosis was devastating. After months of tests, delays, and uncertainty, I feared my cancer would continue to advance. Through the support of Doris and Basic Health International, I received housing, meals, transportation, and access to treatment. Without BHI, I might not be here today embracing my husband and children. Their care feels like a blessing from angels.

My name is Edilia Gonzales, and I live in San Diego, La Libertad, El Salvador. I am a hardworking single mother of three children and earn a living selling tortillas and pupusas on weekends. Receiving a cancer diagnosis felt like a nightmare, but I placed my trust in God and found the strength to continue. I underwent seven chemotherapy treatments and thirty radiation sessions. Thanks to the support o Basic Health International, I never gave up. Today, as a cancer survivor, I encourage all women to get screened and seek help. I am deeply grateful to BHI for providing exams, transportation, encouragement, and the support that helped me overcome this disease.

1. Scientific & Academic Research

We conduct rigorous scientific and academic research to test, validate, and refine novel cervical cancer prevention strategies. Our research focuses on identifying approaches that improve early detection and treatment while remaining feasible in real-world health systems.

This includes:

  • Evaluating high-performance HPV screening technologies
  • Studying self-collection and alternative screening models to reach under-screened populations
  • Generating evidence to inform national and global policy decisions

By partnering with academic institutions, ministries of health, and clinical researchers, we ensure that our findings contribute to the global evidence base and directly inform practice.
